The Power of Grit

When you think of someone who is successful, what comes to mind?  Many people attribute success to talent, often saying, “They are so talented.”  However, psychologist Angela Duckworth, in her best-selling book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, reveals that the true secret to success lies in a blend of passion and perseverance, known as grit.

1.      Talent Does Not Predict Success

Duckworth’s studies demonstrate that talent alone does not guarantee success.  For instance, students admitted to West Point based on their talents did not necessarily graduate.  Those who embodied grit were more likely to persist in their education and careers, achieving more in the long run.

2.      Effort is Key to Achievement

To translate natural talent into real achievement, effort is essential.  Duckworth explains this with her formulas: 1.) Talent x Effort = Skill, and 2.) Skill x Effort = Achievement.  Without effort, talent remains unrealized potential.  Consistent effort over time transforms talent into skill and skill into significant achievements.

3.      Consistency Over Intensity

High achievers maintain a steady commitment to their goals, guided by a life philosophy or a clear sense of purpose.  They emphasize consistency over intensity, much like the Tortoise in the Tortoise and the Hare fable.

·         Capacity to Practice: A relentless desire to improve.

·         Purpose: Believing that your work matters.

·         Hope: Persevering in the face of adversity.

How to Build Grit

·         Set Stretch Goals: Focus on improving one aspect until achieved, then set another stretch goal.  This cycle of goal setting fosters continuous improvement.

 

·         Develop a Daily Practice Routine: Consistent practice at the same time and place can turn effort into a habit, making progress feel more natural and less forced.

 

·         Find a Purpose: Reflect on how your work contributes to a larger cause.  Aligning daily tasks with your core values provides motivation and direction.

 

·         Practice Optimistic Self-Talk: Replace negative self-talk with positive growth-minded thoughts.  Believe in your ability to improve and overcome obstacles, which fosters resilience.

 

·         Surround Yourself with a Gritty Culture: Seek out environments and people that challenge and support you in your pursuit of excellence.  A supportive, driven community can significantly enhance your own grit.
